Shopify India Pricing: Is It Worth It for Small Businesses?
Shopify's real cost for Indian sellers, plus the India-specific problems its own community forum is full of — GST not calculating at checkout, broken Cash on Delivery, no live shipping rates — and how oBizee handles each.

Shopify is the world's most popular ecommerce platform, and for good reason. It is polished, reliable, and packed with features. But when Indian small business owners look at the actual cost of running a Shopify store, the numbers often tell a different story than the marketing page.
This is not a hit piece on Shopify. It is genuinely a great platform — for the right business at the right scale. But if you are a small Indian seller doing 30-200 orders per month, you deserve to know the real cost before committing.
Shopify's Advertised Pricing
Shopify offers three main plans for Indian merchants. The prices listed on their website look straightforward, but they do not tell the whole story.
Basic
₹2,000+
/month
2% transaction fee on all third-party payment gateways
Shopify
₹5,300+
/month
1% transaction fee. Professional reports included.
Advanced
₹21,000+
/month
0.5% transaction fee. Advanced analytics and reporting.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Talks About
The monthly subscription is just the starting point. Here is what a typical Indian small business ends up paying on Shopify:
Real Monthly Cost on Shopify Basic
Shopify Basic plan
₹2,000+
Transaction fees (2% on 100 orders × ₹800)
₹1,600Using third-party gateway
Shipping app (Shiprocket/Delhivery)
₹500-1,000Monthly subscription
Email marketing app (Klaviyo/Mailchimp)
₹500-1,500Most free tiers are limited
Reviews/social proof app
₹0-500
Premium theme (amortized)
₹400-800₹5,000-10,000 one-time
Realistic monthly total
₹5,000 - ₹7,400
for a small seller on Shopify Basic
Watch Out
Shopify's app marketplace is both its greatest strength and its biggest additional expense. Many features that are built-in on other platforms (shipping, email, reviews) require paid apps on Shopify. A seller using 3-4 essential apps can easily add ₹2,000-4,000/month to their bill.
Cost at Different Order Volumes
Let us calculate the real cost for an Indian seller at different scales on Shopify Basic (with essential apps). oBizee has 0 SUBSCRIPTION and 0 SETUP FEE at every volume — see Pricing for the simple structure once you're selling:

The Break-Even Point
Shopify starts making financial sense when you are doing 500+ orders per month and need advanced features like multi-currency, international shipping, or a large app ecosystem. Below that threshold, you are paying a premium for features you may not use.
Where Shopify Genuinely Wins
Being honest here — Shopify is the better choice in several scenarios. Ignoring these would make this article misleading:
International selling
Multi-currency, international shipping integrations, and global payment gateways are Shopify's strength.
App ecosystem
Thousands of apps for every conceivable need — from loyalty programs to subscription boxes.
Enterprise scaling
Shopify Plus handles millions of orders. If you are growing fast and need enterprise features, Shopify scales with you.
The native processing that would waive Shopify's own transaction fee was never launched here — every Indian store runs on a third-party gateway instead.
No built-in, calculated shipping for India
You need a separate app (Shiprocket, Delhivery plugin) just to show a real courier rate before checkout — adding cost and complexity.
Pricing in USD mindset
Many apps, themes, and integrations are priced in dollars. A $20/month app is ₹1,700+.
Overkill for small catalogs
If you sell 10-50 products via Instagram and WhatsApp, Shopify's feature set is far more than you need.
Monthly commitment regardless of sales
Even if you have zero sales in a month, you still pay the full subscription plus app fees.
What Shopify Sellers in India Are Actually Running Into
The gap between Shopify's pricing page and the real experience isn't only about money. Read through Shopify's own community forum and a pattern shows up fast — the same India-specific problems, asked over and over by different merchants.
Why doesn't Shopify Payments work in India?
It was never launched for Indian merchants. Every Indian store runs on a third-party gateway (Razorpay, PayU or Paytm) instead — which means paying Shopify's own transaction fee (0.6-2% depending on plan) on top of whatever the gateway charges, on every order. This one gap is the root cause of most of what follows.
Why did GST stop calculating at checkout?
A live, unresolved thread on Shopify's community forum: merchants using Razorpay report GST no longer being applied automatically, after Shopify stopped sharing full order and customer details with the gateway. The community's own workaround is manual — reconfigure taxes and pull GST data separately after the fact. No official fix has landed as of the latest activity on that thread.
Why does Cash on Delivery redirect my customer to pay upfront?
Shopify's own recommended app for this, Advanced Cash on Delivery, has been discontinued. What's left on the community forum is merchant after merchant trying to get COD working the way they expect — several report the COD option redirecting straight to a Razorpay payment screen instead of letting the customer pay on delivery, with no built-in setting to fix it.
Why can't I show a real shipping rate before checkout?
Shopify's real-time, carrier-calculated shipping rates aren't available for Indian addresses. Every Indian store is stuck choosing between a flat rate — usually wrong for a chunk of orders — or a paid app just to show what a Delhivery or Blue Dart shipment actually costs.
Why doesn't my refund show up correctly?
Refunds processed through Razorpay don't sync back into Shopify's own order and analytics records, so the two ledgers drift apart. Merchants end up reconciling manually to figure out what was actually refunded.
Watch Out
None of this shows up on Shopify's pricing page. It shows up three weeks in, when GST stops calculating or a customer says their "Cash on Delivery" order just charged their card.
How oBizee handles the same list
Razorpay and Paytm are built in — 0 setup, no separate gateway approval to wait on. oBizee's own platform fee is capped, not a percentage that grows with revenue the way Shopify's does (see Pricing for the structure).
GST is a first-party feature, not something bolted on through a payment-gateway integration that can silently break. Merchants generate GST-compliant bills per order — CGST/SGST/IGST worked out automatically from the product's HSN rate and the buyer's state.
Live rate comparison across Delhivery, DTDC, Blue Dart and India Post, per order, before you commit to a courier — the exact gap Shopify has no answer for in India.
An order doesn't require the customer to pay online before it's confirmed — the merchant collects payment the way that works for them, and refunds are tracked automatically inside oBizee's own order and wallet records rather than two ledgers that drift apart.

Our Honest Recommendation
Choose Shopify if:

Have budget for ₹5,000+/month in platform costs
Choose oBizee if:
Under 500 orders/month
Selling to Indian customers

Selling via Instagram/WhatsApp
Shopify is an excellent platform that has earned its reputation. But excellence at a premium price does not make sense for every business. If you are a small or medium Indian seller, the math simply favors a platform built for your scale and market.
