Separate product-review stars from general store praise

A customer saying they enjoyed buying from your shop is not automatically reviewing every product in the catalogue. Keep the subject of a review clear before displaying or marking up a rating.

Identify exactly what was reviewed

The review might concern a product, delivery experience, service or the business overall. Retain that distinction. Moving general praise onto a specific product can create an impression the customer never intended.

Record the source, date, reviewed item and any permission needed for reuse. If the reviewer discussed several products together, do not silently split the statement into multiple apparently independent reviews.

Keep display and search eligibility separate

A visible testimonial and a search-result rating are different matters. Google has specific review-snippet rules and supported types, and valid structured data does not guarantee a rich result. Review-snippet documentation

Ask an implementer to evaluate the correct subject and current requirements. Do not assume that adding stars to a page qualifies the business for stars in search.

Preserve the meaning when shortening text

An excerpt should not remove the condition that changes the review's meaning. “Lovely colour, but smaller than expected” cannot honestly become only “Lovely” beside a claim about perfect sizing.

If the display needs less text, use an accurate excerpt with a route to the fuller context where appropriate. Do not invent a rating when the original feedback contained no numerical score.

Review the aggregation method

Write down which reviews are included in an average and why. Check how duplicates, removed products and imported records are treated. A rounded display should not become a different underlying score.

For a small shop, a few genuine reviews with clear context can be more useful than a large unexplained rating. Do not fill an empty state with fictional customers or transfer feedback from a different merchant.

Choose a trustworthy next step

Start with one product's evidence. Confirm that the displayed text and score can be traced back to the original record, then examine how a new review enters the system. Keep moderation focused on relevance, abuse and policy rather than removing every criticism.

This is a review-governance decision as much as a design task. Use the customer-service library to prepare responses and follow-up, and treat any proposed search appearance as conditional rather than a promised outcome.

Illustrative case to check

A customer writes “Helpful seller; the replacement arrived safely” without rating a particular item. That can be genuine business feedback, but assigning it as a five-star product review invents both a score and a subject. Keep the statement in its appropriate context or ask through a legitimate feedback process. An empty product-rating state is more honest than a completed-looking one built from unrelated praise.

Use this guide, then test your own workflow.

Examples are illustrative. Confirm current features, charges and suitability before making a business decision.
