Precious-metal information should be easier to inspect than a promotional banner. A customer needs to know what claim applies to the item, what evidence supports it and how to check the relevant details.

This page is about organising that information. It is not a substitute for current hallmarking requirements or professional compliance advice for your product and business.

Start with the actual product category

Do not apply gold-jewellery language to gold-coloured costume jewellery. Identify the confirmed material and product before deciding which verification information belongs on the page.

Different products and circumstances can have different requirements. Check the current official rules relevant to what you sell rather than copying a competitor's certification paragraph.

If you cannot establish the material or the evidence behind a claim, do not publish it as verified.

Use official references for official marks

BIS provides hallmarking FAQs and consumer verification guidance. Its guidance explains the gold hallmark information and the HUID verification route through BIS Care.

Link customers to the relevant official resource rather than recreating a verification service in a graphic. Check the current guidance when preparing the listing.

Do not display an official logo in a way that implies your entire store or every product has a certification that has not been established.

Match evidence to the item

Maintain the product identifier, relevant verification details and supporting purchase records together. A certificate or record associated with one item should not be used as a general badge for unrelated stock.

If the listing photograph shows a mark, make sure it is from the actual item or a clearly explained representative example. Do not retouch a mark into a product image.

A customer-facing statement should be specific enough to check without revealing unrelated private business or customer information.

Distinguish different kinds of documents

An invoice, a supplier declaration, a laboratory report and a hallmarking reference are not interchangeable. Name each document accurately.

Explain what you are providing with the purchase and what it establishes. Avoid the loose phrase “fully certified” if the customer cannot tell who issued the evidence or what was assessed.

For gemstones within a precious-metal piece, use a separate gemstone record. A metal verification claim should not silently become a claim about the stone.

Keep price explanations factual

Where a quotation contains several components, explain them in the format your business actually uses. Identify the product and quotation date, and avoid implying that an old quote remains current indefinitely.

Do not invent investment returns, resale guarantees or future metal-price predictions to strengthen a product description. A jewellery purchase should not be promoted through unsupported financial promises.

If a customer needs valuation or investment advice, direct them to an appropriately qualified source rather than treating your sales copy as that advice.

Prepare the support response in advance

Customers may ask how to verify a mark or why a detail differs from what they expected. Give staff a factual response based on the item record and official checking route.

If a discrepancy appears, investigate it. Do not reassure the customer with “all our products are genuine” instead of checking the specific concern.

Keep any correction visible in the relevant listing and order communication. Removing an inaccurate sentence silently does not resolve an existing customer's question.

Recheck information when stock changes

A new supplier, altered design or different material specification should trigger another evidence check. Do not reuse an old product page merely because the new item looks similar.

Maintain a dated internal record of the information checked and the person responsible. This is especially useful when several people upload products or answer enquiries.

The standard is not how many assurance badges fit on the page. It is whether a buyer can understand the precise claim, inspect its basis and receive a consistent answer from your team. Keep the official compliance decision with current authoritative guidance, not with a copied marketing template.

Use this guide, then test your own workflow.
