A quiet conversation can mean many things. The customer may be busy, comparing products, unsure about a detail or no longer interested. Silence is not evidence that they need a discount or repeated reminders.
Use follow-up to resolve a genuine open question, not to pressure somebody into finishing a purchase. Keep permission, context and the customer's preferences at the centre of the decision.
Check what remains unresolved
Read the conversation before writing. Did the customer ask for a measurement you never supplied? Did you promise to check a colour? Or did you already provide everything and the buyer simply has not decided?
An overdue answer from the business is different from a promotional follow-up. Complete the promised task first.
Do not ask “still interested?” when the real problem is that your previous message omitted the delivery charge.
Check whether contact is appropriate
Use the permission and messaging rules that apply to your actual channel and account. Respect requests to stop and do not treat silence as new consent.
WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy is the primary reference for its service; check current requirements rather than relying on an old template or a generic marketing rule.
Avoid using a different number or channel to bypass a person's expressed preference.
Make the message specific and useful
A helpful message names the unresolved issue: “I checked the dimensions you asked about; the information is now on the product page.” It gives the customer something useful without demanding an immediate decision.
If no factual question remains, keep any permitted follow-up brief and optional. Do not create a false emergency to make it sound necessary.
Avoid pretending the message is personal when it is an automated or broadly reused campaign. The content should still fit the actual conversation.
Do not use stock pressure without a real basis
If a genuine temporary hold exists, communicate its actual conditions consistently. Do not invent a reservation or expiry after the customer goes quiet.
Check the current stock before saying an item is nearly gone. A scarcity statement is a factual claim, not merely a persuasive style.
Use the inventory guide to keep enquiries, holds and accepted orders distinct.
Avoid automatic discounting
A quiet buyer may be uncertain about size, timing or suitability rather than price. Offering a discount before understanding the issue can reduce your return without resolving their concern.
If a promotion is genuinely available and contact is appropriate, explain its real conditions. Do not imply that the customer must buy to receive a promised service answer.
The discount guide explains why an offer should have a defined purpose and workable numbers.
Set an internal stopping rule
Decide when the enquiry will be closed or left inactive without further promotional contact. The appropriate rule depends on the context, permissions and actual commitments.
Do not keep sending variations of the same reminder merely because the customer has not replied. Repetition is not evidence of service.
If the customer returns later, check current availability and terms rather than assuming the earlier proposal still applies unchanged.
Keep open commitments visible
If there is an accepted order, verified payment or another real obligation, do not treat the case as a casual abandoned enquiry. It needs the appropriate order or support process.
A customer not responding to a required customisation question may need a different, clearly explained next step from someone who only browsed a product.
Record the case accurately so another helper does not restart promotional follow-ups while an existing order remains unresolved.
Learn from the pattern
Track the type of unanswered question at an aggregate level. Frequent drop-offs after a particular clarification may reveal a product-information or process gap.
Do not infer motives from silence or invent a recovery percentage from a small number of conversations.
Use catalogue preparation and the Instagram-to-store guide to answer more questions before the conversation stalls. The best follow-up often completes a missing answer and then leaves the customer free to choose.
Examples are illustrative. Confirm current features, charges and suitability before making a business decision.
