Social discovery and Etsy answer different parts of the selling problem. A social audience may follow your work before deciding to buy; a marketplace visitor may arrive while searching among products. Neither route guarantees demand.

For an Indian merchant, eligibility and destination rules are an essential first check—not a footnote after a platform comparison.

Check the current India boundary

As checked on 26 September 2026, Etsy's official India help page says new Indian shops can sell internationally and that Indian shops enrolled in Etsy Payments cannot accept domestic sales. It also describes GSTIN verification and a Payoneer payment arrangement. Recheck the current requirements before planning a launch. Etsy's India seller guidance.

That means an India-only local delivery business should not assume Etsy is a direct substitute for its domestic buying route.

This is a summary of Etsy's stated onboarding conditions, not tax advice or a determination of your legal obligations.

Define the customer you can serve

Write where you can realistically deliver, what products you can package appropriately and which lead times you can support.

An international opportunity is not useful if the fulfilment process is unprepared. Do not infer export readiness from an attractive product photograph.

For a domestic social audience, consider whether a current store or structured enquiry route already serves the intended buyer better.

Compare the discovery work

Social content may explain your process, show a new piece or answer questions over time. Marketplace listings need to make a product understandable in a search-and-comparison environment.

Both require accurate images and descriptions, but the presentation task differs. A making-process video does not replace dimensions and dispatch information.

Do not assume social followers are purchase-ready or that marketplace visibility is automatic. Observe actual enquiries and orders.

Inspect the product fit

Review Etsy's current permitted-item and seller policies for the range you intend to offer. Do not assume every product described as handmade elsewhere automatically meets the relevant rules.

For social-led selling, check the applicable platform policies and the supported buying route too.

A channel's popularity is irrelevant if your product or operating arrangement does not fit its conditions.

Compare complete costs

Use current official fee schedules and your actual delivery scenario. Include packaging, shipping and any payment or currency-related costs that apply.

Avoid treating a processing fee as the entire marketplace cost. Do not compare an international marketplace order with a domestic store order as though fulfilment costs were identical.

Keep the calculation dated and label uncertain assumptions. Seek appropriate advice for tax and cross-border obligations.

Plan stock across channels

A unique piece cannot be promised independently to two buyers. Determine how availability is updated if the same product appears in a marketplace and a social-linked store.

If the process is manual, assign an owner and consider limiting simultaneous exposure for scarce items.

Do not expand channels faster than you can reconcile stock and accepted orders.

Respect the original transaction context

Keep each customer's order record and support route clear. Review the marketplace's rules before redirecting transactions or using customer information elsewhere.

An address available for fulfilment is not blanket permission for promotional contact. Preserve the purpose and permissions attached to the relationship.

The operational convenience of one inbox does not justify obscuring where an order was placed.

Include support across time differences

If you serve buyers in another country, decide how you communicate response times and investigate delivery questions. Do not promise immediate replies simply because messages can arrive at any hour. A clear support expectation is part of international operating readiness, alongside the product and its packaging.

Choose a role, then test it

You might use social content to build familiarity while evaluating an eligible marketplace range for international buyers. You might also decide that the current domestic route is the appropriate focus.

Run a limited, policy-compliant test with products you can fulfil reliably. Record the work, costs and customer questions as well as sales.

The right comparison is not “Instagram versus Etsy” in the abstract. It is whether each route reaches a serviceable buyer under conditions your business can meet, with an order process you can operate responsibly.

Use this guide, then test your own workflow.
